Dear Mr. Mercier:

Subject: Operation Wheatbar

The purpose of this correspondence is to inquire as to the current status of this tremendously successful operation.

Operation Wheatbar, to the credit of your Customs personnel, has paid high dividends.  As you are well aware, many of our cases would not have reach a satisfactory conclusion without the spirit of co-operation extended by US Customs.

It is my understanding that the operation was subject to evaluation on an ongoing basis, and it would be appreciated if we could be advised of the status, as of today.

I realize the operation's lifespan has been the topic of intense discussion, however, I believe the results have impacted on the continuation to date.  We cannot understate how critical the maintenance of this program is to the effective enforcement actions taken against those who would choose to violate the regulations.

I am prepared to provide any assistance required to ensure this operation continues, and if there are any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at 954-7625.
